Customer Engagement

Port-P were engaged to analyse the performance and operating costs of the existing SAN by this building society.   This analysis suggested that a SAN refresh was more cost effective in terms of capex and opex than expanding the in-situ hardware.  Security of data and no-time were key concerns of this financial services client.

Due to Port-P’s Vendor agnostic approach, numerous SAN technologies were considered, and following several client meetings, SAN demonstrations and completion of a storage assessment tool, we recommended HPE 3Par due to its strong performance characteristics and space efficient technologies such as Thin Reclamation and Dynamic Optimisation. (To understand these technologies further please follow the links at the end of this document).

Port-P worked closely with the organisations key IT staff to fully understand both the short and long term objectives to ensure the correct model and sizing of SANs. This best of breed solution comprised two 3Par 7200 SANs of 50TB capacity, replicating between sites, with HPE 8/24 Fabric switches.

The customer’s commitment to the project was signed in early March 2014, with an agreed implementation date of the first week in April. Under Port-P’s project management, consultants from HP were aligned with the clients senior IT staff, and with the combined knowledge of the new 3Par coupled with the existing on-site infrastructure, implementation was achieved seamlessly and without downtime in only two days.

Results and Conclusion

The customer has been able to adopt a pay as they grow strategy, adding capacity as and when demanded by the business with no need for downtime. Staff efficiencies have resulted from the lower management overheads, allowing IT to concentrate on proactive initiatives within the business.

Having been a customer since 2009, this organisation continues to use Port-P to this day and trusts us to advise and consult on further investment into their 3Par solution as well as other areas of their key infrastructure including their HPE Blade and VMware estate.

This client is one of a number of reference sites Port-P have available to speak to for any other organisations that are looking at new storage requirements.
